WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.

What we believe about ourselves matters.

Learning.
Leading.
Growing.

I can do hard things!

I am unstoppable!

I matter!

I am smart!

I can change the world!

I’m Stuck on This Math Problem

You don’t need someone to immediately give you the answer. You need to figure out where you’re stuck and choose your next move.

1. Where are you stuck?

Pick the one that sounds most like you right now:

  • I don’t understand what the problem is asking.
  • I understand it, but I don’t know how to start.
  • I started, but now I’m stuck.
  • I got an answer, but I’m not sure it’s right.
  • I tried something and it didn’t work.

2. Choose Your Next Move

I don’t understand what it’s asking.

Slow down before calculating. Ask: What do I know? What am I trying to find? Which information matters? Try saying the problem in your own words or drawing what is happening.

I don’t know how to start.

Find one thing you do know. Look for a relationship, pattern, model, operation, or smaller step that could get you moving.

I started, but now I’m stuck.

Look at the last step that made sense. What changed after that? Try another representation: draw it, make a table, use numbers, estimate, or explain your thinking out loud.

I’m not sure my answer is right.

Estimate. Try another method. Put your answer back into the situation. Ask: Does this answer make sense?

My strategy didn’t work.

Good—that gave you information. Don’t just repeat the same move. Ask what the attempt showed you, change something, and try again.

3. Try It

A class is collecting 168 cans for a food drive. They want to place the cans equally into 6 boxes. How many cans should go in each box?

  1. What do you know?
  2. What are you trying to find?
  3. What operation or strategy might help—and why?
  4. About how large should the answer be?

Now solve it. Then check whether your answer makes sense in the situation.

💡 Funky Tip

Don’t start calculating just because you see numbers. Understand the problem first.

Still Stuck?

Finish this sentence:

“I understand ________, but I’m stuck on ________.”

That is much more useful than “I don’t get it.” If you’ve tried a move and still need help, explain what you understand, what you tried, and exactly where you need help.

I can do hard things.

Doing hard things does not mean doing everything without help. Strong learners try, check, adjust—and know when to ask a useful question.

🎒 Take It With You

Being stuck isn’t the end. Notice where you’re stuck. Choose a move. Try it. Check what happened. Adjust if you need to.
