Help Without Taking Over
Helping is not the same as doing it for someone. Strong help leaves the other person more capable.
1. Ask Before You Jump In
Try: “Do you want help?” or “What part would be useful to think through together?”
2. Give the Smallest Useful Help
- Ask a question.
- Point out a clue.
- Model one example.
- Help break the task into steps.
- Explain your thinking, then let them try.
3. Hand the Thinking Back
After helping, give the person room to make the next decision or attempt.
Try It
A classmate says, “I don’t get this,” and you already know the answer. How could you help without simply giving it away?
💡 Funky Tip
If your help makes you the hero and the other person unnecessary, it probably is not the best kind of help.
I am smart.
Helping someone think is often more powerful than helping them finish.
🎒 Take It With You
Ask → support → step back → let them own the next move.
