What Makes Working With Others Hard — with Azalea, Liam, and Katsumi

Episode Summary

In this episode of The BAGO Mic, three students have an honest conversation about what makes working in groups difficult. They talk about frustration when teammates don’t participate, copy work, or distract others with side conversations.

The students describe feeling overwhelmed when they end up doing most of the work. They explain how miscommunication can cause people to take things the wrong way, leading to hurt feelings, arguments, or drama. They also discuss how negative energy can spread through a group and impact everyone’s ability to focus.

The conversation explores why speaking up can feel hard—especially when someone might react negatively. They reflect on how groups can “fall apart” when members don’t listen or contribute.

Despite the challenges, the students recognize that teamwork teaches responsibility, communication, and accountability. They conclude that listening, correcting behavior respectfully, and staying focused can help groups succeed.

Hainipi (hi-Ne Pee)… that means hi, hey, or hello in a friendly way.

Hi everyone! Welcome to The BAGO Mic, powered by student voice—where students lead the way.

We are students from Winnebago Public Schools, broadcasting from the Winnebago Native American Reservation in Winnebago, Nebraska. This podcast is created by us… for the world.

Let’s start by introducing ourselves.

My name is Azalea.

My name is Liam.

My name is Katsumi.

Today’s episode is about: What makes working with others hard.

Before we begin, we want to share something we’re thankful for:

I’m thankful for my mom.

I’m thankful for my mom, sister, and brother.

I’m thankful for legs and arms.

Now let’s get into it!

Once again, the topic we’re talking about is what makes working with others hard.

It makes it frustrating sometimes when people don’t help you and just mess around.

Yeah, and they just sit there and do nothing and don’t even try to listen to you.

Or they copy off your work. Or they talk to somebody else and don’t listen to what you have to say.

Have you guys ever felt like you were doing most of the work in a group?

Some people just talk and don’t listen to the teacher.

What does that feel like?

Overwhelming.

Yeah. What happens when people don’t listen to each other in a group?

The group can fall apart. They don’t work together and they can get in trouble.

And when someone gets in trouble, the group kind of gets messed up because they lose that person—and maybe that person knew important facts.

Why is it sometimes hard to speak up?

If someone is already having another conversation that’s not about the work, and you try to tell them to get on task, they might get mad and tell you to be quiet.

How can miscommunication cause problems?

People might think you said something else or were pointing something at them. They take it the wrong way and get mad.

What happens when people bring negative energy into a group?

They might seem mad and not want to talk. Other people might avoid them so they don’t make them more upset.

What happens when people cause drama?

People might stop talking to them. They might ignore them or side-eye them.

What is one mistake people make when working in a group?

Sometimes people don’t work and expect you to do everything.

Is it frustrating when people have side conversations while you’re trying to work?

Yeah, because then people aren’t working and it can get the whole group in trouble.

What can you learn from the hard parts of teamwork?

You can correct someone respectfully. If they start working, you won’t get in trouble and you’ll finally have a real partner.

And you can actually talk and work together.
