The Funky Learning Playbook
Strong learners are not people who never get stuck. They build a collection of moves they can use when learning gets hard.
Your Learning Playbook
NOTICE → NAME → CHOOSE → TRY → CHECK → ADJUST → ASK
NOTICE
Catch yourself when learning stops making sense. Your eyes moving, pencil moving, or Chromebook open does not always mean learning is happening.
NAME
Be specific: “I’m stuck because…” Naming the problem helps you choose a better response.
CHOOSE
Pick one useful move. You do not need every strategy at once.
TRY
Actually use the move. Thinking about a strategy is not the same as trying it.
CHECK
Did it move your thinking forward? Can you explain more, solve more, or see the task more clearly?
ADJUST
If the move did not help enough, change something. A new attempt should use what you learned from the last one.
ASK
When you need another person, explain what you understand, what you tried, and where you are still stuck.
Choose the Play You Need
- I read it, but I don’t get it. Slow down and rebuild meaning.
- I’m stuck on this math problem. Find the exact stuck point and choose a mathematical next move.
- I don’t know what to write. Get an idea or sentence moving, then improve it.
- I don’t understand the directions. Find the action and break the job into steps.
- I don’t know where to start. Shrink the first move until you can begin.
- I tried it and I’m still stuck. Use the first attempt as information and adjust.
- I need help—what do I say? Ask for help that keeps you involved in the thinking.
Build Your Own Playbook
Think about a learning move that has worked for you before. Finish these:
- When I’m confused, one move that helps me is…
- When I can’t start, one move that helps me is…
- When my first attempt fails, one move that helps me is…
- When I need help, I can say…
💡 Funky Tip
The goal is not to memorize a giant list of strategies. Build a small set of moves you trust, then add new ones as you grow.
I can do hard things.
You do not prove this affirmation by never needing help. You prove it by staying engaged with your learning and choosing a next move.
🎒 Take It With You
Getting stuck is a moment, not an identity. Notice it. Name it. Choose your next move.
