WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.

What we believe about ourselves matters.

Learning.
Leading.
Growing.

I can do hard things!

I am unstoppable!

I matter!

I am smart!

I can change the world!

Think Like a Geographer

Geographers study where things happen, why they happen there, and how people and environments are connected.

The Challenge

A town wants to build a new public park. Three possible locations have different neighborhoods, roads, flood risks, walking access, shade, and nearby services. How should the town compare them?

How a Geographer Thinks

  • Location: Where is it?
  • Place: What physical and human features make this location different?
  • Pattern: What is nearby, clustered, separated, or changing?
  • Movement: How do people, goods, water, information, or wildlife move through the area?
  • Connection: How do people and environments affect one another?
  • Scale: Does the answer look different at the neighborhood, community, regional, or global level?

Your Turn

Create a comparison list for the three park locations. Include access, environment, nearby people and services, and possible long-term effects. Do not assume every community member uses space in the same way.

What Did You Notice?

Which location looks best from one perspective but weaker from another? Whose knowledge or experience would help you make a better decision?

💡 Funky Tip

Maps show selected information—not every truth about a place. Ask what the map includes, what it leaves out, and whose perspective matters.

Where Else Could You Use This Thinking?

Travel, environmental planning, transportation, agriculture, community development, weather, migration, business locations, and understanding how places change.
